Top Ten Tuesday is a feature run by BrokeAndBookish each week. It’s coming up to that time of year where we reflect on what we’ve read and decide which books have been our favourites. Now there is a couple of weeks left of 2017 so something could sneak in here but here’s how it stands at the moment.
In no particular order, here are my ten favourite books of 2017 – links go to my review.
Moxie by Jennifer Mathieu
This book is a great feminist read. I sped though this book because I related to the characters so much and as I read I’d get this pain in my chest because it felt so real and was equal parts inspiring and frustrating.
Frangipani by Celestine Hitiura Vaite
This book surprised me by how much I loved it. It’s a family drama with a compelling mother/daughter relationship at its heart and it’s such a nice read. I know “nice” isn’t really seen as a positive word but that’s what it is, there’s no major drama or sudden plot twists, it’s just a comforting read.
Power Man and Iron Fist Vol. 1: The Boys are Back in Town by David Walker, Sanford Greene and Flaviano
This was such a fun comic! The art style is really cool and vibrant, and I loved the relationship between Danny and Luke. If you like the Marvel Netflix shows featuring these two, then I’d definitely recommend this comic.
The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson
I read this book in one day! It’s so light and fluffy and there’s dogs! I also really liked how Andie grew as the book progressed and how she dealt with her friends when there was conflict between them.
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
This book made me laugh and it made me cry. All the characters are amazing and Star’s family is one of the best fictional families I’ve read in a while.
Poe Dameron Volume 1: Black Squadron by Charles Soule and Phil Noto
This is a really fun comic. I love Poe Dameron (he may be my favourite out of the new characters) and it’s really cool to see his adventures before The Force Awakens begins – and BB-8 is equally awesome in this.
The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena
This is a book that I gave to two of my work colleagues and my mum because I was so hooked by it and wanted to share the love. It’s a thriller/mystery and I didn’t get whodunnit till the very end which is always a plus when it comes to a book like this.
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
This was such a fun, action-packed yet kind of fluffy read. I loved the characters, their relationships and the humour in it is just my kind of thing.
One of Us: The Story of a Massacre and its Aftermath by Åsne Seierstad
This is an incredible piece of non-fiction. It’s scary and tense and gripping, it’s a tough read but an important one.
March by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell
I read this trilogy at the start of the year and it stuck with me all year. It’s a great insight into the Civil Rights Movement, making it understandable but never shying away from the realities of the time and what John Lewis and so many others went through.
What are some of your favourite books you read this year?
Ooh I enjoyed The Couple Next Door too! Fab list. 🙂
Thanks! The Couple Next Door really pulled me in and surprised me 🙂
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue was so good! I really loved that book!
I should read The Hate U Give soon because everyone seems to love this book so much!
Great TTT! 😊
Thanks! I really think The Hate U Give is one of those books that deserves the hype 🙂
In 2018 I’m going to participate in a challenge about (what’s the name again? Forgot!) reading all or most books from one author. I’m thinking about choosing Morgan Matson. I will choose two, but Morgan Matson books sound so fluffy and so much fun that I really want to read all of them. 🙂
That sounds like a cool challenge! I very rarely read multiple books from the same author in a year – too many books, too little time.
I’ve only read one book by Morgan Matson but it’s definitely made me want to read more because it was a quick read and a lot of fun 🙂 Good luck with your reading challenge!
I picked up “The Unexpected Everything” when it was released, but I wasn`t feeling it at the moment. I`ll probably pick it up again in Spring/Summer – I`m more prone to contemporaries that time of the year.
Carmen`s Reading Corner
That’s when I tend to read contemporaries too! I read it when I was on holiday and ended up speeding through it 🙂
Moxie sounds like SUCH an inspiring novel, same thing as THUG. I need to read both soon, my feminist heart asks for it! ❤
The Gentleman's Guide was fantastic, an I cannot wait to read The Unexpected Everything! i've read two other Morgan Matson books, and they were both amazing. Lovely post!
Here's my TTT: https://bookslikewolves.wixsite.com/blog/single-post/2017/12/12/Blogmas-Day-12-Top-17-Books-of-2017
Thank you! The Unexpected Everything is the one and only Morgan Matson book I’ve read, but it’s definitely made me want to check out more of her stuff.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting 🙂
None of these were on my list this week, though Moxie is on my TBR for next year, so I’m very happy to see that it made yours. I really need to read Gentleman’s Guide and I must be the last person left not to have read THUG.

There’s just so many great books out there to choose from! And I like how this weeks TTT gives an insight into peoples bookish tastes 🙂
There really are! Yes it does, it’s very interesting to see everyone’s different lists 🙂
I couldn’t agree with you more on The Hate U Give. What an excellent read.
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
Thank you for stopping by and commenting 🙂
I still need to read Moxie, THUG, and Gentleman’s Guide – all three look so good! I tried The Unexpected Everything this summer, and I couldn’t get into it, which was a shock since I normally love Morgan’s books. Maybe I need to give it another try! 🙂
There’s so many great books, and too little time! 🙂
Great list! The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue made my list this week too, and I really do need to get to The Hate U Give soon – I’ve seen it on so many lists this week!
Thanks! Yeah it’s interesting to see what books have made it onto a lot of peoples lists 🙂
I need to read Moxie – Great list!
Thanks! Yes do! It’s great! 😀
I’ve heard great things about Moxie, and Power Man/ Iron Fist looks fun too. I kinda like those characters. Poe Dameron looks like it’s worth checking out too!
I really like the art style in Poe Dameron and it’s a nice extra insight into the character and the Resistance, without being something that you *must* read to get more attached to the character and his world. Hope that makes sense!
March and Gentleman’s Guide are on my TBR list. I’m glad to see you liked them!
They’re both really great 🙂
Heard a lot of great things about The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. It came in my Owlcrate Box but I haven’t gotten to it yet. I think I’ll bump it up my list =)
I got the OwlCrate box with it in too! To be honest it’s one of the few times when I’ve read a book from a subscription box pretty quick after I received it 🙂
That’s sounds very promising! Now that just makes me want to read it even more =)
The Hate U Give and The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue were two of my faves this year as well! 2017 was a great reading year!
