The Old Kingdom trilogy

REVIEW: Goldenhand by Garth Nix

goldenhandLirael is no longer a shy Second Assistant Librarian. She is the Abhorsen-in-Waiting, and she has the Dead to battle and Free Magic creatures to bind. When Lirael saves Nicholas Sayre from an attack by a Free Magic creature she finds he is tainted with Free Magic and she must return to her childhood home at the Clayr’s Glacier for guidance. But Lireal is unaware that a great danger threatens the Old Kingdom. A messenger from the North is trying to reach to give her a warning about the Witch With No Face, but who is the Witch and what is her plan? This time the fight may rage both in the living world and in the remorseless river of Death.

As this is a sequel, there may be some vague spoilers for the rest of the Old Kingdom series, Abhorsen especially, but I’ll try to keep them to a minimum.

Goldenhand is brilliant. It continues a few months after the events of Abhorsen and while it is mostly Lirael’s story, it’s great to see how she is fitting in with her new found family and what they are all up to now as well. Sam continues to be slightly oblivious to things that aren’t to do with inventing things but he’s still very smart and capable. In Goldenhand you really see how much Lirael has grown and become more confident but she still gets scared and she’s still mourning her oldest friend which I’m pleased was not something that was easily pushed aside.

The story alternates between what Lirael is doing and what Ferin, the messenger from the North is going through. Ferin is a wonderful new character who is strong and resourceful and never gives up. She is a fighter who doesn’t mince her words and she’s nothing like any of the other female characters that have appeared in this series so far.

It was nice to have Nicholas return, especially as he is a bit of a fish out of water in the Old Kingdom. If you’ve read the series, you as the reader are quite familiar with the world and its ways so it’s nice to see an outsiders’ perspective. Also his and Lirael’s relationship was lovely as the hesitantly try to figure out where they stand and Lirael tries to figure out her feelings in general because even having a friend is something she’s very much not used to.

Goldenhand is a fast-paced book, full of action and suspense and there’s the kind of scary moments when it comes to the Dead. In this book there’s Free Magic creatures you’ve never seen before and shows a whole part of the world that hasn’t really been explored before either. While the majority of the characters, and the stakes, are familiar that doesn’t really matter as Goldenhand is such an enjoyable thrill-ride and it even makes the bad guys interesting.

Goldenhand is a perfect addition to the Old Kingdom series and is a super fast-paced read with some wonderful character moments. 5/5.

TOP 5 WEDNESDAY: Biggest Book Hangovers

Top 5 Wednesday is a great feature created by GingerReadsLainey. To find out more about Top 5 Wednesday and the upcoming topics, check out its Goodreads page. This week it’s all about book hangovers, you know when you finish a book and you just don’t know how to feel because it was so good and it takes you a while to read anything else – that’s a book hangover.

So without further ado, here are five books that gave me the biggest book hangovers.

harry potter 7 book coverHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
This was like the end of an era for me when I finished Deathly Hallows. I had all the emotions when reading it, I was gripped, I laughed and I cried – a lot! I felt emotionally drained at the end of it and it’s still one of the best endings to a series I’ve ever read.

FullSizeRender (99)A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
I went into this book thinking it wasn’t for me but I was sorely mistaken. I was surprised by how much I adored the Monsters stories, how they made me think and feel. A Monster Calls stayed with me for days after I finished reading it.

Abhorsen_novelAbhorsen by Garth Nix
I think the reason this book gave me a book hangover was because it was the first book that made me cry. I had never experienced that before so really wasn’t sure what to do or how to feel about it.

secret avengers vol 3Secret Avengers Vol. 3: God Level by Ales Kot and Michael Walsh
I absolutely loved this series and the third and final volume was well worth the wait. All the threads came together, there was a big showdown and it gave me all the emotions. This comic is one of the few comics to give me a book hangover, I loved everything about it and it took me a while to pick up anything else.

Inheritance2011Inheritance by Christopher Paolini
This is one of those series I started when I was 10 years old and I grew up with the series so when the final book came out when I was 20 it was a huge part of me. Inheritance gave me a mixture of emotions, on the most part I loved it and how the characters stories ended but there was a bit with Ayra that seemed a little too neat and cliché for me. Still, it was a book that made me feel a lot and I wasn’t sure what to read next once I finished it.

TOP TEN TUESDAY: My Top Ten OTPs

Top Ten Tuesday is a feature run by BrokeAndBookish each week – I’m thinking I might not take part every week but just see if a week takes my fancy. This week, as it’s the run up to Valentine’s Day it’s all about romance and couples in books. So I’ve decided to share my top ten favourite couples or OTPs (One True Pairings)!

Hermione and Ron – Harry Potter
I wanted these two to be together before I even knew what OTPs and shipping was. They are probably my oldest and possibly most influential OTP.

Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff – Marvel Comics
Though Clint is kinda my fandom bicycle, my first choice for him will always be Natasha. They just work so well together and give me so many emotions.

Sabriel and Touchstone – The Old Kingdom Trilogy
These two are a team! They were friends before they ended up becoming a couple and they balance each other out.

June and Day – The Legend Trilogy
I love how the series ended for them. It might not be to everyone’s taste but I just love the possibilities it leaves for them. (more…)

TOP 5 WEDNESDAY: Biggest Badasses

Top 5 Wednesday is a feature created by GingerReadsLainey. This is the first week I’ve taken part and I hope to continue with it because it’s a great little feature. To find out more about Top 5 Wednesday and the upcoming topics, check out its Goodreads page.

So without further ado, here are my five biggest badasses!

lisbeth salanderLisbeth Salander – The Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson

Lisbeth has a hard life but she doesn’t let that stop her. She’s a super smart and resourceful genius hacker who can fight men twice her size. Lisbeth will go to any lengths to sort out people who have wronged her or the few people she cares about. She’s just a total badass.

niko leandrosNiko Leandros – Cal Leandros series by Rob Thurman
Niko is a very calm and put-together guy until a monster comes after his younger brother. Niko is a master at multiple martial arts, he can uses guns, knives and he usually has his Katana strapped to his back. You won’t want to go up against Niko in a fight.

sabrielSabriel – The Old Kingdom trilogy by Garth Nix
Sabriel lives in a world where the dead can walk the earth and she has the power to stop them and send them back to where they came from. Controlling the dead is a seriously badass skill. Sabriel can also fight with a sword and practices powerful magic and is more than capable of looking out for herself and the world.

johanna masonJohanna Mason – The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins
Johanna survived two Hunger Games and when she found out she was going back into the Games for the Quarter Quell, she wasn’t afraid to tell people exactly what she thought about that. Johanna is a fighter, she was tortured but she still got up and wanted to fight against the Capitol. Also Johanna isn’t afraid to give people like Katniss the cold hard truth, she’s a survivor and a badass.

elizabeth bennetElizabeth Bennet – Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin
I’m actually reading Pride and Prejudice at the moment for the first time and I’m blown away by how much of a badass Elizabeth is. She might not be a fighter but she’s smart and in a battle of words she’s clever enough to show her adversary that she shouldn’t be looked down upon.

Who are your favourite bookish biggest badasses?

TOP TEN TUESDAY: Top Ten Favourite Heroines

Top Ten Tuesday is a feature run by BrokeAndBookish each week – I’m thinking I might not take part every week but just see if a week takes my fancy. This week is all about favourite heroines – most of mine are bookish ones but there’s a couple from films and TV shows too.

alana-01Alana from the Saga series by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples
Alana is a Landfallian who fell in love and had a baby with a solider from Wreath – they’ve got a Romeo & Juliet kind of deal going on but they are far better at communicating so neither of them have died yet. Alana will do anything to protect her daughter but at the same time she is also impulsive and sometimes jealous. She’s also a former solider so she can handle just about anything that comes her way.

Lucy Pevensie from The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
Lucy is so young and full of belief and wonder at the world around her. I love her faith in Narnia and in her family and how she grows to become quite courageous over the course of her adventures. (more…)

REVIEW: Clariel by Garth Nix

IMG_1973Clariel is not adjusting well to life in the city of Belisaere after moving there with her parents for her mothers work and she dreams of returning to the forests of Estwael. In the city she feels trapped and confined by the politics of society but that’s the least of her problems when a Free Magic creature is spotted around the city. It is her chance to prove herself, to escape from the city and make her own path but things don’t always turn out the way she wished for.

It was great to return to the Old Kingdom series as Clariel is a prequel to the original trilogy set 600 years before Sabriel. It’s was great to see the connections between the books and how the Old Kingdom as a country has changed in the time inbetween the two books. This Old Kingdom doesn’t have respect for the royal family or for the power of the Charter and the Abhorsen meaning that many people don’t believe in it and think of the Charter as something unseemly and something not to be used by respected citizens.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Characters I Wish Would Get Their OWN Book

Top Ten Tuesday is a feature run by BrokeAndBookish each week – I’m thinking I might not take part every week but just see if a week takes my fancy. I love secondary characters, sometimes more than the main character, so this was the perfect Top Ten Tuesday for me as I always want to know more about minor or secondary characters.

photo 1Angela – The Inheritance Cycle – Christopher Paolini
I quite like not knowing much about Angela’s past but I think it would be cool to have a story about what she did after Galbatorix is defeated. I’d love to see her go on more adventures and get involved in other rebellions and excitements.

Robin Goodfellow – Cal Leandros series by Rob Thurman
Robin Goodfellow is a very old puck so I’d love to read about his adventures before he met Cal and Nico in the twenty-first century.

Murtagh – The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini
Murtagh is such a tragic character. I’d love to have a book from his point of view about when he is captured by Galbatorix and how he came to be bounded with Thorn, his dragon. It wouldn’t be a fun story but I’d like to see what was done to him to make him turn against Eragon, but at the same time what made him stay strong and try to protect Nasuada.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Places Books Have Made Me Want To Visit

Top Ten Tuesday is a feature run by BrokeAndBookish each week – I’m thinking I might not take part every week but just see if a week takes my fancy. Books can take you to many different wonderful places – both fictional and real. Here are ten places that I’ve wanted to visit due to reading.

Narnia from The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
I’d like to visit Narnia in any part of its history, when there’s snow everywhere thanks to the White Witch or when everything’s happier during Prince Caspian’s reign.

Hogwarts from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Who isn’t intrigued by Hogwarts?! I’d love to explore where all the stair cases lead and to hang out by the lake and Hagrid’s hut.

New York City thanks to the Princess Diaries series by Meg Cabot
I like how New York is just a back drop to Mia’s problems when dealing with being a princess. That being said I was always interested in New York and two years ago I did go visit the city and absolutely fell in love with the place – but I really want to go again! (more…)
