WWW Wednesday

WWW Wednesday – 22 December 2021

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Taking on a World of Words. It’s a simple meme where you just have to answer three questions:
– What are you currently reading?
– What did you recently finish reading?
– What do you think you’ll read next?

I think it’s a great way to share my recent reads as I don’t review everything I read and often the reviews I do post are behind what I’m actually reading.

What I’m currently reading
The Purple Violet of Oshaantu by Neshani Andreas
I’m very nearly finished this and I’ll probably finish it tomorrow. It’s a story about a woman who is abused and the women in her life that help her.

What I recently finished reading
Cadence of the Moon by Oscar Núñez Olivas
I finally finished this book! It’s one I started months ago but I finally put the time in and read it. It’s a crime story that while I thought it had some interesting moments, I didn’t really like the writing style.

What I think I’ll read next
The City Where Dreams Come True by Gulsifat Shahidi
I’d like to read at least one more book before the end of the year and I think a collection of four short stories might be the way to do it. They’re about Tajikistan’s civil war and the effect it had on the people. This is another book for my Read the World Project.

What I’m currently reading
Rules of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo
I have about three hours left of the audiobook so I wouldn’t be surprised if I finished it today. Everything’s building to all-out war but I think some characters might have a few more tricks up their sleeves and I’m looking forward to seeing how everything turns out.

What I recently finished reading
Shepherd of Solitude: Selected Poems by Amjad Nasser
I definitely haven’t read that much recently but the last book I managed to get through was a poetry collection. My review is coming tomorrow if you’d like to know more but I did like how you could see how the poets themes and styles changed a bit over time.

What I think I’ll read next
Cadence of the Moon by Oscar Núñez Olivas
I started this book months ago and would like to finish it before the end of the year. I’m a big believer in DNF-ing books but I do find it hard to actually do that when it comes to books for my Read the World Project. I think it’s the way the author describes women that put me off a bit but it’s less than 300 pages so if I actually put the time in to read it, it shouldn’t take me that long.

What I am currently reading
Jamilia by Chingiz Aïtmatov
I thought I would’ve finished this by the time I needed to post this WWW Wednesday but work got in the way so I’ll no doubt finish it tonight before bed. It’s a very short book at less than 100 pages and is set around World War One in a small village in the Russia/Kyrgyzstan area and is about a wife of a solider who is working the land while her husband is at war.

What I recently finished reading
The Black Kids by Christina Hammonds Reed
This book was set during the LA Riots in 1992 and I thought it was really good. It’s thoughtful and impactful and while I didn’t always like the main character, I thought her confusion and impulsiveness was understandable. If you like The Hate U Give I’d recommend The Black Kids for something along a similar vein but is set in recent history and around real events.

What I think I’ll read next
The Good Girls by Sara Shepard
I read The Perfectionists last week and really enjoyed it and while I new it was a first book in a series I didn’t quite realise that it was going to end on such a cliffhanger so naturally I had to buy the sequel immediately. Definitely looking forward to seeing if/how the five teen girls prove their innocence for multiple murders.

What am I currently reading?
The Old Drift by Namwali Serpell
Haven’t got a physical book on the go at the minute but I’m listening to The Old Drift on audio. It’s a multi-generational story set in Zambia following three different families. It also seems to have some fantastical or magical elements to it too.

What did I recently finish reading?
The Screaming of the Innocent by Unity Dow
My full review of this will be posted tomorrow but while it took me a while to get through this book, even though it was just over 200 pages, I did like the mystery and how it explored how prevalent corruption was in this time and society.

What do I think I’ll read next?
Loveless by Alice Oseman
I’ve kind of been in a bit of a reading slump recently and usually contemporary YA gets me out of that, or at least it’s something I can read very quickly so hopefully that’ll get my reading groove back. I think because my recent reads for the Read the World Project have been quite heavy it’ll be good to have something potentially lighter.

What am I currently reading?tokyo heist elenasquareeyes
Tokyo Heist by Diana Renn
I love anything to do with heists. I love true stories about heists (as long as no one got hurt) and I love books and films about heists so this book is right up my street. It’s all about a missing painting and I’m pretty much bang on half way through and I do like it even though the main characters dad is the absolute worst – he is really not a good parent and he bugs me whenever he appears.

What did I recently finish reading?Fairest elenasquareeyes
Fairest by Marissa Meyer
Though it’s not a proper part of The Lunar Chronicles (Re)Readalong I wanted to read Fairest before Winter came out this month. As Fairest is a prequel it was interesting to see what Lavana was like when she was younger and what made her so evil or if she was always like that. It was a quick read and now I’m really looking forward to see what happens in Winter.

What do I think I’ll read next?the house of hidden mothers elenasquareeyes
It depends on when I finish my current read. Either I’ll read The House of Hidden Mothers by Meera Syal, a book that seems like it’s a family drama but also has some humour in it, or if it’s out I’ll go straight to Winter by Marissa Meyer because I can’t wait to see how the series ends.

What am I currently reading?
Night Rise by Anthony HorowitzNight Rise ElenaSquareEyes
As it’s the ReReadathon I’m rereading The Power of Five series. Night Rise is the third book of five and even though I only started it yesterday and it is 400 pages long I’m making good headway with it. It’s a bit odd being with new characters as in the previous two books the focus has been on Matt so not following him was a bit strange to start with but that being said it’s great to learn about Scott and Jamie who are two of the Five.

What did I recently finish reading?Evil Star ElenaSquareEyes
Evil Star by Anthony Horowitz
The second book in The Power of Five series is my favourite so far and it’s actually the one that I could remember the most about even though it’s been almost 10 years since I first read it. The last third in the Nazca Desert is action-packed and what happens with the Nazca lines was pretty scary and one of the things that always stuck out about this series.

What do I think I’ll read next?
Necropolis by Anthony HorowitzNecropolis ElenaSquareEyes
And continuing the ReReadathon with the fourth book in the series! I really want to power through these now, even though they are now getting longer and more complicated with more characters, because I’ve never read Oblivion (the fifth and final book in the series) and really want to see how it all ends.

The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
This is a short book and a pretty accessible classic but I’m finding it slow going because I’m really not a fan of the protagonist. He’s cocky, a liar and just a bit of an insensitive prat. Hopefully I’ll finish it today though – only have about 60 pages left.

Cinder by Marisa Meyer
I really enjoyed this fairy-tale retelling. It has a cool world, great characters and while I did guess what some of the “big reveals” were going to be half way through the book I still found it a fun and fast read.

Scarlet by Marisa Meyer
I think I’m going to continue with The Lunar Chronicles and therefore #TLCReadAlong with Scarlet. Red Riding Hood is one of my favourite fairy-tales so I’m intrigued at how it’s going to be adapted for this world.

The Hounding of David Oluwale by Kester Aspden
This is a non-fiction book about the true story of David Oluwale, a homeless black man in Leeds who was found dead in the river. It then looks at how and why he ended up there and how the police were involved. It’s a short book but because it’s quite a tough read it’s taking me a while to read it, I do find it interesting though.

Slashback by Rob Thurman
I really enjoyed this book – I always feel like returning to the Cal Leandros series is like returning home – a home full of violence and monsters. It’s a world I know well and it’s comforting and easy being around familiar characters.

Secret Avengers Vol. 3: God Level by Ales Kot and Michael Walsh
I’ve been really looking forward to seeing how this run of Secret Avengers ends. It’s definitely been one of my favourite comics I’ve read so far – the characters are great, it’s funny, the art is quirky and it’s just a lot of fun. I have a lot of love for this series.

Crash and Burn by Michael Hassan
I’m not sure what I think about this book at the moment. Crash is telling the story leading up to when Burn takes their school hostage and how Crash stopped him and saved the school. There’s certainly a gallows humour in it which is weird for a book about a school shooting and I am intrigued about both Crash and Burn but at the same time the characters aren’t that likable. I’m half way through it now so I kinda feel like if I give up on it now I’ll have wasted so much time on it – I guess I’ll keep powering on.

What did I recently finish reading?FullSizeRender (92)
X-Men: Days of Future Past by Chris Claremont and John Byrne
While the actual Days of Future Past storyline was only across two action packed and fast paced issues, the rest of the collection had the lead up to that event so you knew more about the characters and the stakes that they’d be facing. I’m glad I’ve now read this iconic comic.

What do I think I’ll read next?FullSizeRender (94)
Techbitch by Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza
I saw this book in WHSmith and had to pick it up. Mainly because the similarity between the front cover and the Fifty Shades of Grey movie poster made me smile and I hope that’s been done deliberately. It’s all about how social media and the internet is changing the magazine industry and as someone who works in PR I’ve seen those changes and how some embrace them and some resists them so I’m interested to see what the main character in this does to survive the changes.

So here’s my answers!

What am I currently reading?scarlet
Scarlet by Stephen R. Lawhead.
This is the second book in the King Raven trilogy and its focus is on Will Scarlet. I like how it’s told, as it begins with Will in jail and telling his story to a priest as he waits to be hanged after being caught by the Sheriff. I like how you slowly are seeing the events that lead up to his capture.

Runaways Volume 2 by Brian K. Vaughan, Adrian Alphona and Takeshi Miyazawa.
I loved this book. The next chapter in the Runaways lives was just as interesting and heartfelt as the previous volume. There were new characters and old faces and there was a lot of twists and turns too. And what an ending!

What do I think I’ll read next?FullSizeRender (85)
I’m not sure. If I feel compelled to finish the trilogy immediately then it’ll be Tuck by Stephen R. Lawhead. Otherwise I might take a break from long books and catch up on some comics like Ms. Marvel Vol. 3 by G. Willow Wilson, Elmo Bondoc and Takeshi Miyazawa and ODY-C Vol. 1 by Matt Fraction and Christian Ward.
